10.6.2 kexts | generic install guide

Specs:

  • Install Method:

    1. Boot existing Leopard 10.5.8 installation.
    2. Install Snow Leopard 10.6.0 retail DVD onto new partition using guide.
    3. DO NOT REBOOT YET.
    4. Install VoodooPS2Controller-0.98-installer.pkg on the Snow Leopard partition.
    5. Remove all GMAX3100 kexts from /System/LIbrary/Extensions on the Snow Leopard partition.
    6. Boot Snow Leopard partition with -x32 flag to force 32-bit mode.
    7. Proceed through setup screens.
    8. BEFORE REBOOTING, install remaining custom kexts.
    9. Reboot with -x32 flag.
    10. Run Software Update, bringing the system to 10.6.2.
    11. BEFORE REBOOTING, remove all GMAX3100 kexts from /System/Library/Extensions.
    12. Boot into single user mode with -x32 -s flags and re-install custom kexts.
    13. Rebuilt kext caches.
    14. Reboot with -x32 flag. Several of the modified kexts above will not work in 64-bit mode.

    Works:

  • Audio: works with VoodooHDA kext, hadware volume knob works
  • Video: QuartzGL/1280x800 native resolution with modified Intel GMAX3100 kexts
  • USB ports work with modified IOUSBFamily.kext
  • PS2 keyboard and trackpad work with VoodooPS2Controller-0.98-installer.pkg
  • Wifi: Linksys Wireless-G USB adapter works with RT73USBWirelessDriver.kext
  • Bluetooth: Broadcom BCM2046B1 USB adapter works OOB
  • Battery meter works with VoodooBattery.kext


  • Doesn't Work:

    QuartzExtreme graphics not supported. Onboard Bluetooh does not work. Onboard SD card reader untested.

  • Doesn't Work:

    Quartz/OpenGL graphics are not supported by the native VIA S3 UniChrome chipset. I installed an NVidia GeoForce FX5200 which works with the nvinject driver from the install DVD. The unit does not have integrated WiFi so I bought a cheap Linksys PCI card. Onboard ethernet is untested. Onboard 8-in-1 memory card reader untested.

  • Doesn't Work:

    The X41's 1.6GHz Centrino CPU only supports SSE2 instructions, and as such Rosetta apps don't always function properly. PPC binaries such as Manga Studio Debut 3.0 (the main reason I wanted to run OSX on this tablet) crash frequently and in unpredictable ways. When you shut the laptop lid it futzes the screen. The desktop is still visible, but with much distortion and many artifacts. This can be corrected by manually switching the resolution and then switching it back to your default settings.
